Strengthening Relationships Through Clay: A Look at Our Valentine’s Day Pottery Event
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and connection, and this year, we invited couples to do just that—through the art of pottery. Our special Valentine’s Day Pottery Event was more than just a creative experience; it was an opportunity for couples to connect on a deeper level while working together on something tangible.
Guided by Roleen Selby from Clay Magic, couples shaped and moulded their own beautiful mugs, learning the delicate balance of creativity, patience, and teamwork.
Meanwhile, couples counsellor Kaela Sussman provided insight into the therapeutic importance of shared activities in strengthening relationships.

The Fragile Heart: A Symbol of Connection
The workshop began with an introductory exercise, “The Fragile Heart,” where each partner received a delicate, unfired clay heart. Kaela explained that just like these hearts, relationships are vulnerable and require care to remain strong.
Couples took a moment to reflect on their emotional needs, writing down three things they personally require to feel safe, nurtured, and connected in their relationship. Then, they shared their reflections with their partners, fostering open communication and a deeper understanding of each other’s emotional worlds.
The Power of Shared Experiences
Engaging in activities as a couple—especially hands-on ones like pottery—offers more than just fun; it fosters communication, trust, and collaboration. Kaela Sussman emphasized how working on a creative project together can help partners:
- Improve Communication: As couples navigate the process of creating something together, they practice expressing their needs, listening, and problem-solving.
- Strengthen Bonding: The shared experience of learning and experimenting with clay creates positive memories and reinforces emotional connection.
- Embrace Imperfection: Just like relationships, pottery requires patience, adaptation, and an appreciation for the beauty of imperfection.
Throughout the event, couples laughed, shared moments of quiet focus, and supported each other in bringing their unique mug designs to life.
Creating Together: Crafting Meaningful Mugs
With these reflections in mind, Roleen Sleby led the pottery session, guiding couples through the process of crafting their own unique mugs.
Each couple worked side by side to:
- Shape the body of their mug using a mold.
- Allow it to dry slightly before adding details.
- Attach a heart-shaped handle, symbolizing their connection.
Throughout the process, couples encouraged each other, laughed, and problem-solved together, making the experience both fun and meaningful. As the mugs set, couples took a break to enjoy tea, coffee, and snacks, allowing time for casual conversation and shared moments in a relaxed setting.
Personalizing Their Creations
Returning to their pottery, couples:
- Smoothed out imperfections and refined their mugs.
- Used underglaze to paint unique designs and add personal touches.
- Used a hairdryer to help set the underglaze before firing.
Just like relationships, this step reminded couples that attention to detail, patience, and personal expression create something truly special.
Sealing Intentions: A Meaningful Closing
To conclude the workshop, couples participated in a symbolic ritual to reinforce the emotional work they had done.
- Each partner placed their written reflections inside their mug and burned the paper, representing transformation, release, and renewal.
- Then, they exchanged their fragile clay hearts from the beginning of the session, sharing one promise they would make to nurture their relationship moving forward.
This closing activity left couples not only with a beautiful handmade mug but also with a renewed sense of connection and commitment.
Crating More Than Just Mugs
Beyond the art of pottery, this event was about building stronger relationships. The experience of molding clay became a metaphor for relationships—requiring care, flexibility, and collaboration to shape something meaningful.
As couples left with their handmade mugs, they carried more than just a physical keepsake; they took home a reminder of the power of working together, communicating openly, and embracing the beauty of their unique connection.
One of our attendees shared:
“Thoroughly enjoyed the Valentine’s Day workshop. It was a therapeutic and fun experience—highly recommend! Both my partner and I will definitely be doing other workshops here in the future. Thank you so much to the team ⭐”
