Healing Through Clay: A Tribute to Lives Lost at Our Pottery Studio
At our pottery studio, we’ve always believed in the transformative power of clay. It’s not just a medium for creating art—it’s a way to connect, heal, and process emotions. One of the most powerful examples of this came when two young children and their mother tragically lost their lives in a house fire. Their passing deeply affected their classmates, and our Healing Through Clay program played a small, yet significant role in helping those left behind.
Supporting Children Through Loss
The children who attended the same schools as the ones who lost their lives were struggling with the weight of the loss. We sensed their confusion and pain, so we decided to offer a unique way for them to process their grief. Our Healing Through Clay class acts as a safe space for expression, and we wanted to extend that space to help children navigate this incredibly difficult time.
We visited the two schools where the children had been enrolled and introduced a simple but meaningful activity. Each child was given a piece of clay and invited to press their handprint into it. The act of pressing their hands into the cool, smooth clay allowed them to physically engage with their grief, marking the clay with a symbol of their presence and loss. This was Healing Through Clay in its purest form.
Sharing Grief and Finding Connection
As they pressed their hands into the clay, the children were encouraged to share their thoughts, memories, and emotions. It was a quiet, intimate moment, with some children whispering about their classmates, while others remained still, reflecting on the gravity of what had happened. Our owner, who led the session, shares, “It was incredibly moving to see the children use Healing Through Clay to express their grief. For many, it was the first time they were able to articulate their sadness. The clay was no longer just an object; it became a medium for healing. In pressing their hands into it, they were able to leave a part of themselves behind, a tribute to their lost friends.”
A Lasting Tribute
The handprints in the clay became lasting tributes to the children and their mother. These plaques, filled with personal significance, were later given back to the children’s families as a way of honoring the memories of those who were lost.
