Skills Used in Our Pottery Pieces
The techniques used in our adult pottery classes range from traditional methods to modern innovations, each offering a unique way to engage with the clay. Here are some of the key skills our students develop as they create their pottery masterpieces:
Slabbing
Slabbing is a technique that involves rolling out flat sheets of clay and using them to build shapes or forms. This method is perfect for creating geometric designs, plates, and trays.
Sculpting
Sculpting is the art of shaping clay into three-dimensional forms, whether realistic or abstract. This allows students to push their creativity by working with the clay to form detailed figures, or unique abstract designs.
Painting
Painting pottery involves applying coloured underglazes or slip to decorate the surface of your piece. This technique allows students to add intricate designs, patterns, and colours to their pottery.
Coiling
Coiling is one of the oldest pottery techniques. Here, long coils of clay are stacked on top of one another. This skill is often used to create bowls, pots, and other organic shapes.
Throwing
Throwing is a technique using a pottery wheel to create symmetrical, forms such as bowls, cups, and vases. By centering the clay on the wheel and shaping it with your hands and tools, you can create fluid and uniform pieces.
Glazing (with Clear Glaze)
Here, a layer of glaze is applied to the piece before it’s fired in the kiln. At Clay Magic Studio, we use a clear glaze to enhance the natural beauty of the clay while giving it a smooth, glossy finish.
